Prof. Rangamini Werawatta

About Me

Professor Dr. Rangamini Werawatta is an esteemed academic and technology expert with a remarkable career spanning various domains. He is the Director of the Asia Institute Advanced Studies and the President of the Association for ICT Professionals. Prior to his appointment as the Dean of the Faculty of Computing at the Lincoln University Malaysia Sri Lanka Campus, he was the Founder Director of the School of Information Communication Technology at the Nāgānanda International Buddhist University(NIIBS). Beyond his role at the university, Prof. Werawatta actively contributes to several startups and technology-based organizations, serving on their Board of Directors & also serves as an Expert & Resource Person for few Government organizations and Universities.

Prof. Werawattas journey in the realm of information and technology commenced with the successful completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology from the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. Building on this foundation, he pursued a Masters degree from the University of Colombo, where he focused on exploring the impact of Information Technology on a countrys development process. His academic pursuits culminated with a Doctorate in IT from CCSU and he is currently working towards attaining a Doctor of Business Administration degree from AeU, Malaysia.

One of Prof. Werawattas notable achievements is the design and development of a Bachelor of Science Honours in Information Technology degree program. His efforts in obtaining approval from the Ministry of Education of Sri Lanka for this program have significantly contributed to shaping the future of IT education in the country. Moreover, he played a key role in establishing the ITEC scholarship scheme in collaboration with leading companies in the ICT industry. Through this initiative, students enrolled in the program were provided with scholarships and job offers from top companies from the very beginning of their study journey.

Before his tenure at Nāgānanda International Buddhist University, Prof. Werawatta held leadership positions in the ICT Departments of various prestigious organizations in Sri Lanka. Notably, he contributed to organizations such as MDF Training & Consultancy, National Youth Services Council, Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS), and S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike National Memorial Foundation (BMICH). His expertise extended to projects encompassing IT industry, International Relations, Foreign Policy, Cyber Studies, Youth Empowerment, Security Studies, and Conflict Management. These projects had both local and international significance, with engagements in countries like Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, UAE, Netherlands, Ukraine, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and Thailand.

As an academic, Prof. Werawatta has been dedicated to sharing his knowledge and expertise with various local and international academic and training institutes. His areas of focus include E-Business, E- Commerce, Information Communication Technology, Social Media, Technology Management, and Cyber Studies. He has actively contributed to institutions such as Leeds Trinity University-United Kingdom, NIIBS, BCIS, and MDF Training and Consultancy.

Prof. Werawattas contributions extend beyond academic institutions. He regularly contributes to national newspapers, sharing his expert knowledge on crucial topics such as Information Management, Cyber-Crimes, Cyber Threats, Cyber Security, Cyber Politics, Social Media, Information Security, Internet as well as Leadership and Management. Additionally, he has published academic articles on these subjects, establishing himself as a recognized authority in the field. Notably, he is the author of the publications  Cyber Security: 01 Byte from the Cyberspace" and "Impact of Social Media on Cyber Crimes in Sri Lanka.

Prof. Dr. Rangamini Werawatta is a distinguished member of the British Computer Society (MBCS), Chartered Institute of IT, United Kingdom. He was awarded the Membership of the Institute of Certified Profesional Managers, Sri Lanka. His affiliation with these professional bodies further bolsters his academic knowledge and enables him to share his insights with fellow professionals.

Mr.Werawatte’s educational qualifications do not provide justice to his intellectual or
professional capacities, in my day to day engagements at BCIS, I realized that he possessed

Mr Werawatta was instrumental in conceptualizing
and delivering a tailored MIS system to capture and analyse complex field data in a project for rural women in
Afghanistan.
In his time with us he has developed a thorough understanding of the development sector and the process of
social change. He has delivered several training programmes on our behalf for development actors in areas
such as fund raising and social media and is the author of our Development Professionals Social Media
network page.
I was impressed from the beginning with Mr Werawatta’s ability to think out of the box. He is a serious and
committed individual with great integrity and professionalism.

I have always been impressed by Prof. Rangamini’s consultancy and client engagement skills.
